Artisti in mostra

The historical Galleria Frediano Farsetti Milano is proceeding on its new course of receptiveness to contemporary art, and exchanges with it, that had begun with the one-man exhibition of Vittorio Corsini curated by Marco Scotini, in a triennial cycle of exhibitions devised and curated by Lorenzo Bruni, and titled Connection.

An extensive, in-depth analysis will be carried out and will enable artists from different generations and countries to intercommunicate in a new way on the theme of the transmission of knowledge in a period in which digital and portable archives have made all sorts of artistic expressions accessible everywhere and at any time.

Iniziamo da qui (“Let’s begin from here) is the collective exhibition that inaugurates the project, with a vernissage on Wednesday 19 June from 6 PM onwards. It will present an overview of twenty-first-century Italian art through the works of three up-and-coming young artists, Catherine Biocca, Giulio Delvé and Diego Miguel Mirabella, in addition to two special projects conceived for this occasion by two artists of the previous generation, Vedovamazzei and Cesare Viel.

The title Iniziamo da qui has a triple meaning: it refers to the beginning of the new cycle of exhibitions, but at the same time it draws attention to the international artistic debate, starting, however, from the Italian context and focussing, as necessary, on the territory in which the activities of Farsetti Arte, first as an auction house, then also as an art gallery, have been going on for decades. The third meaning relates to the specific feature that characterises all the works in the exhibition, that is the aim to combine a strong poetic transcendence with the endeavour to make the spectators aware of where they are and what they are observing in that specific moment, and with the effort to measure the physical and mental perimeter with which the artists interact and make us interact. The choice of creating a relationship between the works of art and the architectural space that houses them, which has a strong nineteen-sixties stylistic connotation, stems from the artists’ need to overcome the white cube aesthetics, in order to deal with specific sites and balance the digital world’s possibility to carry out exchanges with an infinite range of times and realities.

Lorenzo Bruni has selected five artists, reputed to be among the most interesting currently active ones, in order to establish a connection between two generations that share a reflection on time and events.

The artistic itinerary of Vedovamazzei and Cesare Viel was characterised, since the nineteen-nineties, by a strong investigation of the role and nature of a work of art, highlighting the exchanges with the context in which it had been conceived and developed. Their presence in the exhibition draws attention to the fact that a work of art is the outcome of a process and suggests a deep reconsideration of the abstract/figurative categories, and also of those of a work’s short-lived action/duration. Their choice to give rise to a coincidence between what is extraneous and what belongs to everyday life allows us to ponder on what may be regarded as culture in our day, and on the worth of museums and of the spectators themselves. The two entrances of the exhibition space will accommodate their works, which reassess some works of the past in order to observe how common sense and the perception of shows, poetry and the unconscious have changed in our time.

Catherine Biocca, Giulio Delvé and Diego Miguel Mirabella use different artistic techniques to inquire into the capability of natural, everyday objects to retain the experiences that pass through them. The bas-reliefs, pictures, installations and videos displayed in the exhibition aim to give a concrete form to the perimeters of the images of things; but this perimeter remains seemingly illegible. Their purpose is to express their need for a new depth, in relation to the world of digital media, where everything seems reachable, but nothing actually is. Another constant aspect of their creative processes is attention to nature; however, it is evident, in Mirabella’s images of sheep, Delvé’s palm leaves and Biocca’s sea, that this is a nature that never is recognisable, but appears as a collective hallucination that finds its way into the mixture of the works. This aspect is indicative of their concept of colour, which does not correspond to a property of an individual object but passes from one to another, becoming an instrument for the investigation of the independent strength of its essence.

In October of 2019, the Galleria Frediano Farsetti will house a second exhibition that will establish a comparison between three European artists who share a search for the transformation of forms between perception and experience.

The artists in the exhibition

Catherine Biocca (Rome, lives in Berlin) addresses the themes of drawing, such as those of splatter works in the times of digital screens, by creating installations, paintings and objects that challenge their own bidimensionality and insist on the theme of contemporary sculpture and monuments.

Giulio Delvé (Naples, where he also lives and works) investigates the aspects of assembly and ready-made objects in order to reflect on the transformation of natural and artificial forms.

Diego Miguel Mirabella (Rome, lives and works in Brussels) works on the boundary between an image from memory and a new image, in order to analyse how the perception of works of art and of reality is conditioned by the cultural codes of the individual subject, even if the latter feels disengaged from the elements of the universal language.

Simeone Crispino and Stella Scala, better known as Vedovamazzei (Milan, where they also live and work) are extremely prolific artists, so much so that it is impossible to confine them in a theme genre, a formal current, or a single working method. The images they produce, ranging from sketches on paper to gigantic installations, are so strong as to remain deeply impressed in the minds of those who look at them. They make a carnal use of irony, presenting their own bodily reflexes, exposing all the excessiveness that characterises them, and tackling universal themes in an utterly fearless manner.

The protagonists of the works of Cesare Viel (Chivasso, lives and works in Genoa) are words and the body, accompanied by several means of expression, including prose, performances, videos, photographs and drawings. A particularly important role is played in his research by the emotional involvement between the narrator and the observer, through a route made of thoughts and tales.
